Default Ideas for a quarantine tank

    0 Not allowed!
    Hey all,

After reading about the importance of a QT, I've set my intentions to get one setup or acquired. Does anyone have recommendations on the minimum size, filter, methods of keeping it running or taking it down when not needed? Do I need a substrate and décor, or can I leave it pretty bare if I don't keep it up all the time. Basically, all the ins and outs of having a QT.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best,

    Khiya

I use a 20H for my quarantine. I use a penguin 150 on it and I always keep a couple cory's in it to keep it cycled.

    210g monster fish tank.
    125g planted wild altum tank

I don't keep a QT myself, but I would think 20g is a good size for one. If you don't want to keep it up all the time, you could run a 2nd filter (HOB) on your main tank to keep that seeded and just transfer to the QT when you need it.

I use a 10G as QT. Depending on the fish you keep, it might be enough. I have the tank itself ($10 at Petco's $1 per gallon sale) and a home made filter I made for about $8. You can see it here. My only large expense was the heater, an Aqueon Pro. You can keep it bare if you wish, no need for decorations or even a substrate.

Some people advise against transferring anything from the QT back to the display to avoid the risk of transferring diseases, so if you don't want to transfer media back and forth you can keep it cycled by feeding it ammonia every third day.

You can get all the gory details of having a QT tank in this sticky.

That's a weird advice, considering that when you move a fish out of quarantine into the main tank it is the same risk as moving the media from the QT filter into the main tank.

I never thought of that! I know I have repeatedly read here that any equipment you use on the QT should stay with the QT... it made sense until just now LOL.

Ok. I think I'm going to get a 10 gal. I've been looking on craigslist for a good deal. So far a few good ones have popped up. I've decided I'll just leave it up and running. Question though, will it stay cycled with a few small snails and shrimp in it? Or do I need a larger load?

I think if a fish in QT got sick, then you would not use or transfer equipment into the display tank.
