Default snails gettting sucked up in my filter outlet

Can someone please offer some advice? My snails keep getting sucked up in my marineland filter that is hooked onto the back of my tank. They somehow slither from the glass of the tank onto the filter and then on down to the part of the tube that is serrogated and all the stuff gets sucked in. They don't get sucked in completely but they get stuck to it and the only way I can pry them off is to either shut the filter off or pick them out with a toothpick and they are already dead. They make things like guard filters to keep this from happening to fry shrimp, snails and other small things that could get potentially get sucked up. My problem is I can't find one. Does anyone have any good recommendations on how to prevent this?

    Thanks.

I use Hydro Sponge Pro replacement sponges over my intakes to keep snails (and cherry shrimp back when I kept them) away from the intakes. The stainless steel mesh works, but clogs up with debris very quickly, slowing down the flow rate considerably. Alternatively, you can also use a small aquaclear foam block, just cut slits in the top/middle to allow the intake to fit tightly into the sponge.
