i have these gars for a few months now. they have grown significantly since i bought them but now its about a couple of weeks they both are sick. one of them seems to have air sack problem. it's not eating and sometimes can not maintain his balance. the other one is not as bad as his companion but he has a weird bulky spot (nevus) on his back. he is eating but has become very picky and does not eat anything except dry shrimps! you can see him on the photo.

Using a liquid test, measure ammonia and nitrites. Both should be 0ppm. If not, then you need to do a water change to bring it down to below 0.25ppm. Also test for nitrates, and make sure it is below 20ppm.

Have been able to do a water test yet?

Never had gars, but they are big fish, maybe the stress of being in a small tank is contributing?

Well they are wild near me. From what I know they are relatively tolerant of poor water quality. They are predators and tend to prefer a fast moving meal. Full grown they wouldn't be able to turn their head around in their current tank, let alone the entire body.

Hello Hope your gars are doing better. I have had gar for almost 12 years now. First you need a bigger tank! My first gar lost all his fins and 1 eye in the pet stores 30 gallon tank won't get i put him in a 240 gallon and he turned right around. was a great fish they need alot of room and leave room at the top of the tank for them to come up and put their heads up.
