Unhappy Fin Rot or actual physical damage

I have two silver dollar and two koi angelfish. I noticed the other day that I just woke up and one of the silverdollar had a small tip of his back tail gone but it was like a clean cut. I just assumed that he must of gotten it stuck on something. I took out the fake plants and drift wood which left the fish and the sand substrate. I have had a problem with algae so I have been putting a sheet over it during the day. A week and a half later I woke up and everything looked fine, the silverdollar's tail is looking close to back to normal and then my prized, beautiful, koi angel had the tip of his top fin missing but his did not look like a clean cut. Some of it was missing and it had about 3 (scales I guess you would call them) of his fin were still there. This is how fin rot has been descibed to me as but there is no blackening on his scales, its just missing :( . Is this fin rot?

Yes, pics would help a lot here

You typically would see white fuzzy edges on the fins in most cases of fin rot
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
