I can think of two reasons. one is that more people are starting to realize that keeping a sw tank is not really that hard. the other is that discus tanks require a lot of maintenance. I decided on discus because I had every kind of fw tank and wanted the challenge of discus because they were so "hard" to keep. they are not. just takes more time and effort.

Very well put. Discus are actually pretty easy once you do the prep work and set up your schedule properly.

+1 to that. if you take your time to do your research first, it is actually very easy to get and keep a good and healthy reef tank

How hard you reef tank is to maintain will depending on how you set it up
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
