The fish doesn't look to be too badly injured. I expected worse from your description. It should heal quickly with the right care (provided there are no internal damage)

The others are however right. It should not be kept in the same tank as the rest of your fish. The mix you allready have with a mix of african and central American is not really recommendable either. There are some really aggressive fish in there and some that prefer a more peaceful community.
Do as I say. Not as I do.

Thanks guys...unfortunately he died a few hours later. :(
I wish I had read your replies sooner. I don't think I'll be adding another FM to this tank in the future. But wow are they beautiful fish.

Well my actual advice would be to get rid of the JD jewel and parrot cichlids. Add few more mbuna and a trio of Victorian haplochromines to round out the 55. I can't keep up with what the proper names are but I know I had some that were colored similar to a firemouth, topped out at 3 inches, and could hold their own with anything that couldn't eat them. Two small pieces of advice. Mbuna hybradize very easily so try to keep all one species or all one sex. And second, some of the smaller victorian s are amazingly mean to their own or similar looking species. A 55 will only hold one male of many of them even tho they are only three or four inches.
