Yes, at the end of a fishless cycle you can add the majority of your fish. However there are cartain fish that need more established tanks so I would give your tank a month of two after you add fish to add them. Something like corys, plecos, otos (usually if you research it well tell you that sucandsuch needs an established tank)need established tank. Tetras would be good to go in when you are done cycling.

    Hey!

I cycled my tank with 20 fish

Actually, I started off with five and gradually added more over the course of several weeks. But I'd advise against what I did...I had zero issues but I think I was just extremely lucky.

Cycling with fish has its pros and cons just like cycling without. There are some stickies in the Beginner's section and a whole sub-forum dedicated to cycling. Best to read as much as you can and then decide which route you wish to take.

You mentioned having a buddy who worked at the store. You might be able to get them to snag some of their filter media to help seed your tank with the nitrifying bacteria and cut your cycling time.

Edit: Sorry, reading fail. I just noticed you said your friend got discounts, not worked there.

He does work there, that's why we get discounts when we go! I'll ask him about it next time I see him :)

Thanks for tips on Cycling, I think I'm going to do a fishless one, but I shall go read some (or all?) of those forums :D

Also, the bag thing is for a different issue than how many new fish you can add at once. Letting the bag float for a while is just to let the fish gradually adjust to the different water temps between the bag and the tank. Temperature shock is an easy way to kill your new fish.

Adding too many fish at once will spike the toxic ammonia levels. If you don't have enough beneficial bacteria in there to convert all that new waste into less-toxic nitrates you will have some sick/dead fish on your hands.

Definitely read the stickies. Then, if you want, browse through some of the actual cycling threads to give yourself and idea of what issues people have had.

    +1 it will help you.

Just a caution with taking the media from PS; I would be sure they hadn't treated for something recently. Not sure if that could/would be brought to your tanks with the media.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. But would that be as much of a risk if she was doing a fishless cycle? Would diseases be able to survive long in a tank with no hosts?
