Yes, I've seen discus in planted tanks, too...and in bare bottom tanks, also...for different reasons

I find them a bit complicated, probably the reason I'll never own them...they are beautiful fish, though

If anyone complains about otos sucking on leaves, they don't know very much about them, lol...they are algae eaters...they do no harm to plants by removing algae from the surface of the leaves...at least mine don't

It's actually pretty fun to watch them graze upon the plants, especially long stemmed ones...they'll feed upside down from leaves to get every bit of algae they can!

Don't be sorry, they way we learn here is to ask questions, share opinions, and teach one another

And angels do quite well in a planted tank also. Yes, they are a cichlid but mine have never touched the plants.

Emperor tetras are another larger tetra to consider.

Angels do wonderful in a planted tank til they get what I call the "snap". Pretty much from when your fish goes from nice to "Im going to chase everything in my way". You definitely want all robust/full size tetras when you're keeping a 4"+ Angel, even the angels smaller than so can get aggression.
It is a cichlid, after all, but they don't do much to the plants. I'm sure when they are full size, they can damage certain plants, though.

And I agree completely on emperor tetras, probably a better fish to keep than both Congos and Diamonds if you ask me.

And to address the discus conversation, where discus are from, it's a sandy substrate with a lot of DW, and rotten leaves at the bottom. No plants, but discus can still be kept with plants in the hobby.
I'm staying away from discus myself because they just seem like too much constant work along with having so many plants. I have the appropriate tank size to keep them in (125g), but I know I am enjoying what I have more than I would enjoy discus. I have much more options and less stress.

I have kept my angels in a planted tank for years. I just can't keep water wisteria cause they'll eat it like Crazy. Any other plant they won't bother.
