Thats what I do. Sometimes I keep both filters on while other times I keep 1 on
When everything goes without a hitch its only then do you realize something is wrong

Ok, so I went to the local store, and actually got lucky enough to catch the owner there (very knowledgeable older guy who keeps fish himself) \o/ He repeated a lot that you guys have told me and, after talking to me about what we want to do with the tank, hooked me up with an aquaclear 30 that came with the ceramic rings, sponge, and carbon filter. I figure if I need too I can always hook my marina s20 back up for some extra filtration.

Good deal...save the carbon for future use, instead fill the filter with as much ceramic media as you can, on top of the sponge on the bottom

Sounds like you are on your way. As others have mentioned, it's very common to run two filters at once, so having that option is a great advantage.

Make sure you read the sticky on fishless cycling in the cycling section of the forum. One advantage of fishless cycling is that when your tank is cycled, you can, in principle, add your full stocking at once, because your tank will be ready. I'm not advocating adding all your stocking at once because many other things are at play, but you can certainty add a nice group of fish all at once instead of adding one at a time. That way you will have a nicely populated tank from the start, and then you can add more fish slowly.

We decided to go with cycling with fish since it fits with what we were planning to do anyways - 1 fish per week max with the exception of 3 when introducing new schooling species. We have 3 neon tetras in there right now. I'm going to stop posting here and start a journal, but I wanted to give you guys an update.
