Exclamation Firemouth and Jewel cichlid, fighting with lips!!!

ey, does lip- locking between cichlids harm the fish?? Im going to get a rocky cave soon to help with territory, but right now, the fire mouth and jewel cichlid in the 55 gallon are fighting. Im unsure of the gender of the jewel, but the firemouth is a male and he occasionally lip- locks with the large jewel. Would a large cane help ease, or only further ignite conflicts between those two?

lip locking is a normal dominance behavior, and is not normally fatal. Having said that, if the dispute can't be settled (not enough territory to go round) - and likely adding one cave will not help - the less dominant fish will eventually fade and die due to the stress of being unable to get away from the dominant fish.

lip locking can result in a broken or dislocated jaw. The wounds from lip locking can also get infected.
