I'm sure this is an unusual request, but I hope the members of the Community can help me. Does the photo resemble a known fish? I thought maybe a Sturgeon because of its head-shape. Maybe a Carp? I'd appreciate anybody's best guess. Thanks. Photo0503.jpgPhoto0503.jpgPhoto0503.jpg

What are the origins of this object? For instance, if you had gotten it at some tropical vacation spot it might be a stylized depiction of a native species.

Thanks for the response. The picture of the fish in question is from a mobile(?) that one of my past family members purchased. The reason I'm asking for an identification is I am re-finishing the fish mobile (there are 6) and I would like to keep the coloring of each fish as it would appear in nature. Thanks for your help. And I thought the same way you did : I figured it was purchased somewhere locally (I reside in Southern California) and assume the artist probably chose the fish from species in the Pacific Ocean.

I thought it might be Carp-like because of the head shape. I think that's the prominent point that will identify the fish type. Or a sturgeon?

It might well be a freshwater fish, and since artists often take lots of room to deviate from a strictly accurate drawing the possibilities are endless. However, I believe it might be a saltwater (and especially tropical reef) fish because 1. people mostly find freshwater fish really dull and unworthy of interest and 2. the most interesting fish for most people come from reefs. The stripes and spots (which carp and sturgeon lack) could also suggest a more vivid color scheme in life should this fish be a depiction of a real species.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw it was Harlequin tuskfish.

Thanks for your suggestion. After Googeling Harlequin tuskfish ,I would have to agree that there are similarities. And the coloring is bright enough to make the piece interesting. You've been a great help. If you care to take another identification I am posting another photo. Thanks.
