    hey guys, long time no see.

    finally ran out of my prime, and i was looking at getting seachem safe for my tap water dechlorinator. but i would need to measure out 1/200th of a gram for my 10g tanks. then i was thinking i could make a solution of "prime" out of the safe. any idea if it would be shelf stable that way?

    This is what I found from there site;
    Q: Can I mix Seachem Safe with water and store the solution to use later on. So instead of using the dry powder, I can use it pre-dissolved.

    A: Safe does not have the stabilizers, like Prime, to keep it stable in liquid form. We do not recommend mixing it and storing it for future use.

    Hi geno, good to see you again. I haven't used Safe myself but I do believe there are a couple people here who do. You might get a more definite answer from the Seachem guys though. Their website has a Q&A
    section.

    I am interested in the answer to your question myself, when you find out, let us know.

    I wouldn't count on Safe being able to neutralize chlorine or chloramines for more than a few hours after touching water. If you get the newer instructions, it will say about 1/4 teaspoon (1.25g) for 300g and to treat up to 1ppm of chlorine/chloramine. What this means it that you have to look up your water report and find out how much chlorine/chloramine is in your water, then do the math to calculate the dosage.

    I just got off the phone with Seachem and according to their rep, once chloramine and chlorine is removed by Safe, it stays removed. However, if you are going to add more water after a couple hours then you need to redose Safe since it will have been in the tank long enough to react with other substances in the tank and will no longer be able to remove additional chloramine and chlorine. Safe works the same as Prime when dealing with ammonia and nitrite.
    I think if you are able to work out the dosing, which isn't really all that difficult, then Safe is a good choice and even more economical than Prime.

    Not sure how many 10g tanks you have, but if you allocate 1 day for a water change for all the 10g tanks, you could mix a Safe solution for 50g (let's assume you have 5 10g tanks) with water, and divide that solution among the 5 tanks, just right before fill up. I'm assuming that you can refill all those tanks in less than 1 hour after making the Safe/water solution.

    For my maintenance, I add proper dosage of Safe, and then proceed to refill the tank with a hose for the next hour. I've had no issues.

    From what I understand, you cannot use Prime with either purigen or the other renewable chemical product they have. Prime has slime coat and that destroys the renewable properties of that chemical filter. Safe is recommended to use because it does not have the "slime coat" component.

    I know the whole "renew with a soak in diluted bleach solution" raises lots of red flags to me, which is why I get the renew to chemically filter my water. Its disposable.
