I haven't had chiclids, but welcome I know there are lots of members who will be able to help you with your chiclid tank. From what I have seen the tanks have no plants but caves for them claim as territory or breed in. Maybe someone with experience can confirm my educated guess.

Hello and welcome! Have you cycled your tank yet? Look in the beginning section under cycling and read up on the fishless cycle. Very important to cycle this way and will save you quite a bit of headache later on.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

Nice tank and they will really show better with the black sand. If the plants are near the shells they can dig them up. Try putting the shells on one side and the plants on the other side further away. They really like escargot shells if you can get them. I got 30 on ebay for pretty cheap.
Mine Multis really make some hills and valleys with the sand so get ready for that it's fun to watch.

Multis will dig and "scape" your tank for you so plants might get uprooted. You can secure a few plants in corners with a rock and they'll be ok. The important thing with multis is to provide more shells than fish and try to break up the sight-lines. I'd say you don't have enough sand in that tank and should pile more in (probably double the depth you have there) as this will allow the cichlids to build up their mounds (the shell will be buried at the top of each mound). And like I said, a few carefully positioned stones will break up the eye-lines and avoid too much bullying.

I'm considering a multi tank sometime next year (not definitely decided yet), so I'll be watching for any updates you post. Good luck with this.

Multi's don't really need many plants in their tank. What they do need is sand, rocks, and plenty of shells. Here are some well done shelli tanks for you to see.

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
