Default Suggestions for setting up planted 2.6 gal

    Hi everyone!

I used to post a lot a few years ago (had a 55 gal and a 5 gal, both planted) but had to sell everything when we got a tiny little apartment and I went back to school so had less time for the hobby.
I miss my tanks so I recently purchased the fluval spec (2.6 gal) and plan to put a betta in it eventually (after cycling and such).

Because it's been forever since I set up a tank I am not sure what to use now! In my old tank I had seachem flourite I believe (it was black sand) and I really liked it but wanted to see if something else might be better for such a small tank and also what plants would work best in a small tank and also be beneficial for the betta? I'm also wondering how many/little plants to plant as I don't want to crowd the betta of course, but have read they really enjoy plants.

It's been forever since I've had a betta so I forget what plants they enjoy the most.

My tank is brand new, so open to any aquascaping ideas! Thanks so much! I'd love to get it all situated this weekend so I can start the cycling process next weekend and hopefully get a fish within the next two months or so, lol. :). Been forever since I hadto start a tank from complete scratch!
    2.6 gallon Fluval Spec

Empty for now - going to get a betta after cycling.

My personal preferance is black sand. Also florite black sand. Are you near good lfs or want to order online.

I love black sand too but read it's not the best for live plants?? Which is weird bc it worked well before.

I am close to many LFS but also not opposed to buying online. My only qualm is that it seems like I have to buy in massive quantities. And I not sure what I would do with all the excess. I also don't know how much I would really need for only a 2.6 gal tank?

I think you could use 5 lbs of sand and get 2" of sand depth. 11.8" L X 10.5" W X 8.7" H is the tank dimensions. I have used petco sand with no issues. and Seachem root tabs. and the plants i have grow good.

You wouldn't need too much, I don't know an exact amount. For sand, shouldn't be anymore than I'd think a 5 pound bag. For plants and decor, I would do Anubias, some crypts, maybe a cluster of moneywort, some type of carpet plant, a small dark piece of driftwood with java moss attached, and some light colored stones to lighten up the tank a bit since you're doing dark sand. For the large quantities thing, anything you don't need, offer it for sale or for free if you'd like on here and I'm sure someone would appreciate it.

I'm guessing it's too late now you've actually bought the tank but I would strongly urge you to consider something larger for your future betta. Whilst they can exist in these tiny bodies of water I would recommend something larger. Not only will the betta have more space but it will be easier to maintain stable water parameters.

I'm using Tahitian Moon Sand in my Spec V and no ferts. You can see crypt wendtii, hygrophilia compact and dwarf sag growing great. I replaced the original light with a FugeRay LED light. You can get this in 5 lb bags and I think I got mine at either Petco or Petsmart. But you can get it on-line also.

I understand your concerns but this was as big as my space allowed. I did a lot of research before buying and I read that 2.5 gals was the minimum acceptable. While I'd love something bigger I just don't have the space. So I got what would fit in my space while still allowing room for the betta to thrive.

That's why I am asking about the plants. I know there's not a ton of free space so I don't want to crowd out all future swimming space, but I also know they like plants.

I have a filtration system and heater.
