Lycoris squamigera, often called the Surprise Lily or Resurrection Lily, though it is more closely related to Amaryllis

We call them Spider Lilies down here...yep, only bloom in September, which is the peak time for hurricanes around here, so some call them Hurricane Lilies

Lovely flowers! Do deer normally eat them? What USDA zone do they grow in? Where I live, it's considered Zone 5, but we have micro-climates that can bring it down to as cold as Zone 4 and sometimes colder. Do the bulbs or rhizomes need to be dug up and stored indoors over the winter?

Here in the South, where we rarely get "hard" freezes, you just leave the bulbs in the ground...they sprout every year around September on their own...

They don't stick around long, though...maybe a month at most

The ones I call mine is about 20inc. tall . The flower head itself hasn't opened completely yet. The ones in the picture are the original group of flowers , they're growing in the yard next door . They make up about twenty stalks . I've seen them bloom for over ten years now , and i'm not sure how old they really are but they do add a little burst of color every year.
