If I remember right from when I was a kid, they need a LOT of filtration! :)

Anyhow, it's good to see another aquarium of "native" fish.
    Thanks! And this might help.
    The art of keeping Crawfish

Crawfish are gr8 pets, I recommend. They're exotic, extremely entertaining when they actualy move, and are super easy to domesticate and take care of.

    The Basics:
The crawfish I'm talking of are about 1 1/2 inches long and are found in creeks across North America. Mine were caught in PA, where they are so plentiful they are actually hurting the food chain.
3 crawfish should have about 30+ gallons of water and a handful of hiding places. I do suggest using Jungle Start Right on the water in order for safety, but they aren't picky. They've lived happily a few days in yucky sink water.
IMPORTANT: Make sure all crawfish are about the same size. I lost a smaller crawfish, and what's scary is that I can't find where it would be.

They should be fed Shrimp Pellets bought at any fish store. It may take a couple of tries before they start realising it's food, so it's a good idea to have omnivorous fish as companions. I suggest feeding them once every other day, as they have a small appetite.

Depending on how many companions there are, I suggest cleaning about once a week or every other week.

Not much lighting is optimal. They appear to be a bit more active when the lights are dimmer, though it may be my imagination.

They are so far peaceful, but sometimes can be a bit aggressive with their own kind, mostly when one is swimming on top the other or trying to steal food.
Optimal companions would be just about any fish that can't eat these guys. I'm not sure how snails would do as companions, but I do suggest trying as they are good at keeping algae on check.

Sorry for double post, but I can't find the edit button. So here's important advice on crays, USE PEBBLES.
Large rocks like mine are too big, and one of mine got wedged in and lost a claw getting out.

    Excellent info!

I may have to try a few. There are lots of them in this concrete intake structure, and at times they congregate in the shallow, sloped end of it. It seems like it may be a mating or moon phase thing. There will be hundreds of them all close together in the middle of the night there when it happens,

They are mostly pretty big, probably four or five inches from nose to tail on average.

We've been tempted to have us a crawfish boil. :)

I'm not sure they'd be as good as the ones we had down in New Orleans!

Some of the birds around here seem to think they're tasty, though.
