Thread: New 90 Gallon

  1. Default New 90 Gallon

I am looking to setup a new 90 Gallon that has come into my life. I am a little ways away from it seeing water as I want to try my hand at building a cabinet and canopy, then I am going to try to do the plumbing in pvc instead of flexible piping - looking at BML for lights and thought about playing with a controller for those... I am getting ahead of myself. While I get started I want to have my eventual fish list in mind so if there are any decisions impacted by that, well I know where I am trying to get to.

So what do you think of a stock of Melanotaenia Lacustris, German Blue Ram, Rummynose Tetra, clown loach or 2 and some green laser corys. Anyone see any issues with that mix?

Finding a 90 gallon tank is awesome, building the cabinet and canopy sounds like your into the DIY category which is priceless.

Your stocking sounds reasonable but for the Lake Kutubu Rainbow fish (Melanotaenia Lacustris). Unless they have become used to a normal pH as they are found in waters of 8.5 - 9.0 pH the other species you have listed like my Favourite GBR and Rummynose tetras, which usually prefer 7.5 - 8.0 pH, may have an issue. I have never kept green laser corys but most cories also like the 8.0 pH range. If the Kutubu's are thriving in normal pH water at the LFS I would give it a try. Are those Rainbows still on the endangered species list?
Please post your new tanks progress as thats what keeps alot of us going in this hobby until we find the funds or the space.

Finding the rainbow fish may be the challenge, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it. For now I want to be sure the list is reasonable with no big issues. Good to know about the ph though so I look for fish acclimatized to the lower ph. Thanks!
