  1. Default API Filstar Canister Filter Bio stars or ?

Hello sorry if I am posting this in the wrong area. I am new here and wasn't sure.
I am really new to using canister filters. I am just learning about them and I have got
a API Filstar Canister Filter XP-L and I have it on my 125 gallon aquarium I am just starting up.
My question is it only comes with 5 bio stars so I think I read that I need more then that so is
it okay if you use other besides bio stars? Can you mix the ones that came with it with other
like bio rings from Fluval ? I think they both serve the same purpose? Also how many is the
correct amount to put in a basket of the filter? Any suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, you can use different types of biological filter media in a canister filter as long as you do not over fill the canister media compartment.

When I set up my Rena XP filter, I used a combination of the stars that came with the filter along with fluval bio-max rings. Been working great for the past 4 years now
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I would fill it with enough to look full. But not so much that the baskets dont fit together. Not the best anwser for amount but i hope you get the idea.

Thanks for the info! I only have the 5 bio stars that came with it but I think the box of bio rings I bought had
30 in it so both of them together do you think that is too much? Should I take some out? I am just so use to other
filters I really am just learning about the canister ones and just hope to do everything just right for my fish.

As long as the filter media baskets can be easily stacked on top of one another, you should be fine
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
