One thing I have found - if you have a lightly stocked tank and more biomedia in your filter(s) than your tank needs, not all of the media will have BB growing on it. The extra biomedia is only helpful if you have a heavily stocked tank and have grown BB on all your biomedia to support the heavy stocking.

Because I don't have live plants, my tanks are lightly stocked to keep nitrates down. When I used what I thought was seeded biomedia from my 75 gal to set up a QT for the unfortunate glowlight tetras last year, I ended up with a fish-in cycle in the QT. Not anywhere near enough BB on the media I pulled from the 75 gal, which had been up and running for almost 6 months. There's no point in adding extra biomedia unless you have or are adding the stock to support it.

Me, too. I prefer my biomedia and tank to stay clean and any gunk in the bottom of the filter, not in with the biomedia or in the tank.

Well, I'm planning on adding 6 Cory's to the my 29g. I'm not sure what my stocking level is currently considered with 8 emperor and 6 cardinal tetra. Medium? Heavy? If the Cory's push me into the heavy category, I may need more bio media as my tank is only moderately planted. Or more plants I suppose.

You could add 6 corys, no problem, as long as you have good filtration

If the filter is an Eheim 2215 classic, the filtration should be more than enough.

Oh, apologies. The EHEIM is for a new tank setup. I will be adding the corys to an existing tank that is running both a Fluval C4 and an AC70.

Ha, I think we are losing sight of what the issue was. Would it be wise to remove my filter pads so I can add more bio media when I add the 6 corys to the 29g? Are the corys bumping me up into the heavy bioload range (yet safe), thus benefiting from more bio media?
