    Only through experience can one know how long the bacteria stays in tact, and one would have to be willing to risk failure to find the line. Most are not. I am. I've left tanks empty for months and not lost the cycle.

    Interesting. Maybe since the tank at one point had fish there could be trace amounts of ammonia or other stuff causing trace amounts of ammonia. I just didn't realize they could last that long without any.

    There's waste in the filter that continues to break down. I don't clean my filters more than twice a year.

    My quarantine tanks are treated no differently than my show tanks. I know people like to [try to] sterilize everything after each use, but unless you have some huge problem like TB or something, that's just not necessary. I don't want my quarantine tanks to be "clean" environments - I want them to be as similar to my show tanks as possible. That limits the chance of surprises once the fish is introduced.

    Well, ever since I went spongeless, my filters would be a solid mass of gunk if i waited that long to clean them....heck, even WITH sponges, my filters got a cleaning every 6 weeks or so...and they needed it

    I guess it just depends on what you choose to have in the tank (in my case, leaf litter can be messy) and I've got alot of fish

    I don't mind taking care of the tank, I enjoy it, actually
