    It officially starts today... I have placed an order for 2 koralia powerheads. Using my 20 long tank. Starting out fowlr, eventually gonna go reef.

    Progress will be slow for a while, can't afford to buy everything all at once...

    I may regret this but I'm gonna keep track of costs...
    Tank=$17 used
    Silicone=$10
    Powerheads=$45
    Heater=$30
    Total so far=$102

    I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'm gonna ask anyway: I have a bunch of african cichlid substrate... that won't work in a marine tank will it?

    A true aquarist knows what it feels like to step on a sharp piece of gravel
    do as I say, not as I do- William
    Sandy hook, need lest we forget- steeler58
    I think if someone thinks clownfish are called nemos they should banned from keeping sw tank.

    no, I wouldn't put used cichlid substrate in my salty tank - aside from other issues, its likely holding on to all kinds of nitrates which would be a real pain for a salt tank.

    +1 one to that

    You can also have other trace elements leach out of the substrate which can lead to a bunch of little problems down the road
    If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

    I had a gut feeling the substrate wouldn't work. Now I also have practical reasons to back it up. Thanks guys!!

    Not sure on the source for LR... gotta get more supplies first before I'm ready for it anyway...

    Powerheads should be here Friday...

    I would like this to eventually be a "zoa garden", and would appreciate tips from experienced salties on planning the tank accordingly... Thanks!!
