So I've finally finished cycling with fish. (At least I'm pretty sure I'm cycled) After months of frequent water changes what a relief! here's my test results (API master kit):
Ph 7.6 on the low 7.4 high
    Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 20ppm

Here's my questions, once my nitrate starts creeping to 40ppm how do I lower it? Small water change?
Also, can I add real plants now?

+1 to above, and marimo moss balls, and hornwort are what you should start with, both do fine with any light.

Like Slap said, the usual WC schedule around here is 50% weekly water changes. I'll get bored some nights and do a second one just for the heck of it.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

Lately, whenever I do a water change all of these particles and cotton-y looking things float around everywhere. I tried to suck it all up but it was impossible. I rinsed the filter cartridge in dirty water bucket the time before this. Any tips?
