I have german blue rams in similar water type. The africans would be a better fit. Than the SA. That is just my $.02 .also what is your pH?

Where I live our water is pretty hard an my pH is 8.0, I have a bolivian ram in my 20 gallon high. I've only had home for two weeks so I am by no means an expert on dwarf cichlids but my bolivian ram seems happy, swims a lot, eats healthy and performs a lot of typical behaviors such as sifting through the gravel so I would say he is happy

Hard water at ph 8 doesn't make me want to suggest anything suggested so far. I'd look into Tanganyikan cichlids if I were you. Some of the shell dweller species and Julidochromis would thrive in those water parameters. They don't get too big either.
