A canister with the inline heater is the way I would go. Being it's a betta tank, that keeps the water temp consistent for both sections. Being there is flow between the sections, you would have to have a hospital tank if one fish became ill anyway.

Not to mention how this will effect the flow. If you get one canister filter suited for a 30 gallon, the majority of the flow is going to stay in the section with the return line. So the betta in that section is probably going to get knocked around a bit. I think it would cause too much water circulation for the little guy to handle well.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

You're both right (I didn't think of that).

    How many sections are there?

i was thinking of doing 4 sections and using two EHEIM 2211 canister filters. I'd position a spray bar vertically at each end, and point them towards the middle of the tank. i'm pretty sure the flow can be adjusted on those filters, right? since flow can be an issue with betta, we'll have to see what it's like before i put any fish in the tank. i have two 10g tanks with ZooMed 501 canister filters on them. i just point the spray bar toward the back wall of the tank. i haven't had any issues yet. if my plan doesn't work out i'll just put one of the EHEIMs on my 29 for some extra filtration.

so for dividing the tank, i was planning on using either craft mesh or i was going to buy some plexiglass and drill a crap load (technical term, ha) of holes is it. i will definitely test the flow to make sure water is circulating through the entire length of the tank properly before i buy the betta. if it ends up not working the way i would like, i'll just turn it into a scrap the whole idea and turn it into acommunity tank and perhaps get some pearl gourami and some little schooling fish. :)

That's what I'd do, TBH...a 30G divided 4 ways would be an undertaking I wouldn't even consider...too much of a hassle, and too many variables to try and juggle

You've LOTS of neat options community-wise with a 30 gallon

I kept 4 pearl gouramis in a 45 which is a 36 inch tank without any issues. They'd still be in there if I still had the tank. 1 male and 3 females.

I don't have bettas, but don't you have to keep males from seeing each other?
