  1. Default Media Baskets - What's in Your Basket?

    1 Not allowed!

Just wondering if anyone uses anything else besides floss in their media basket. I'm going to get my Penguin 330 going, and besides stuffing it with floss, is there anything anyone else likes to use.

I only use sponges and biomax in all my filters (both HOB and canister).

It's been a while since I had one of those filters, but could you use more biomax in there ?
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

All my canisters are set up the same - first tray is fluval ceramic prefilters, second is sponge, and the third (and fourth) are filled with biomax. HOBs are aquaclears so they have sponge and biomax.

I don't use filter floss at all.

My media "baskets", or storage areas, are filled with nothing but ceramic media...no sponges

My own personal experimentation has shown that sponges are not needed

I use stainless steel mesh pre-filters, not sponge, with great success

thats what I was curious about. I was thinking about biomax but I had never used it in the 330 before. I've heard of anything from moss to gravel and charcoal. looks like my gut with the biomax is spot on?

I've thought about this question in a thousand ways. It is a double-bind and here is why....

Check out the folks in your local aquarium clubs. Do they have a $100 filter on every one of the 100 tanks in their basement? Are they spending precious dollars on filter media and the newest, sexiest, if you can't **** it, it ain't worth it, promotion?

    Be safe and be sane.

I've never had 100 tanks in my basement but I have had 20 tanks running in my house. If I didn't spend some money on quality equipment I probably wouldn't have been able to hear the TV. Am I going to go buy a nice canister filter and fill it with pillow stuffing, dish scrubbies, and all the other makeshift medias people use (saw someone suggest Easter grass once - what a TERRIBLE idea)?? Absolutely not. I'll spend $10 on a box of biomax that I never need to replace.....

I see no need for extra filter media in my canister but I do use a lot of sponges to protect my motor. I set mine up with sponges course and fine, then 2 layers of biomax rings toped with a sponge and last just a sponge. I leave the last open just incase I need to throw in carbon or some other temp. Filter media. Ive ran all my t.anks for 3 solid years now without the need for any carbon at all. I even had to dose meds once but did 3 pwc to clean the tank sof the needs... but I always leave a spot for just incasies
