I think it'll be every 2-3 days before you see any reading showing up

If its actually that large of a tank 50% daily would be excessive by a bit much

The OP said it is "at least" 50 gallons...until we are positive of the size (maybe the OP can give dimensions?), I would try to change as much water as practically possible, TBH

    Good point.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

I'm assuming again I mis calculated tank size and it's about 30 gallons. Oops. Figured this out emptying half the tank with bucket measurements. I used API quick start and used whole bottle for the 15 or so gallons of water I replaced. Is this the same as conditioner?? Bottle said for start up and water change and adding fish. All gups... Now only 7 out of 12 left alive are at top of tank. Ugh.

I just googled Quick start and it does not appear to be a water conditioner, so this could be your problem right there.
    Do you use tap water?
If so, most water companies add chemicals which are no good for fish, like chlorine and chloramine. A water conditioner is used to neutralise these chemicals before fish are exposed.
55g planted: 10x adult guppies, 9x kuhli loaches, 7x black neons, 2x neons, 6x Amano shrimp, assassin snails & cherry shrimp

10g planted: Occasional platies & black devil trumpet snail

I'm going to go to the fish store and purchase a big thing of water conditioner. I think I should not use the quick start. I replaced half the water last night with the quick start and now my nitrates are not there. They were at a healthy level and now gone. My ammonia level did go down slightly... the color was more towards 0 than the day before. I'm hoping I can save these last 7 gups. I'm going to continue to change the water 50% with the water conditioner. Maybe I should buy some good bacteria... plant life?? Maybe some floating stuff. Again, i'm hesitant to take advice from the fish store.

Ok some questions before you go ro lfs. Can you get seachem prime? It is execleant water condentioner, for removal of chlorine and ammiona. Second what type of test kit are you useing? To test for aammoina? And did you get a chance to read in cycling section, cycling with fish a sticky on the top of page?

As for bacteria in a bottle it isna toss up if it works. I have not found good proof the products work. But if you want to try api stress zime i might help
    Fishes go "pook pook"

Good advice really need to read the "cycling with fish" sticky if you haven't already, it is here:

Get some Seachem Prime for your water conditioner, and an API Fresh Water Master Test kit...those are the only things you need to complete the cycle...don't waste your $ on other products

Ignore any advice you get from the LFS, all you need to know can be found here on the AC

Good to know we're dealing with about 30 gallons instead of 50, you need to be changing about 1/2 of that water every day

Yes - I have been testing with the API master test kit.

I'm going to stop and get that brand water conditioner as soon as I leave work today and replace 50% of the water again.

Sadly - I did read on cycles - after I already purchased fish. So.. I have to cycle with the fish. If they do not survive I will re-cycle and use the fishless cycle method. My kids are crying that fish have died already.

This momma feels bad. No more dumb mistakes - like listening to the fish store. They told me filter running for a month would be fine. UGH.
