  1. Default Ammonia dropped, but no traces of Nitrite/Nitrate?

    0 Not allowed!
Hey again everyone! So I started my cycle on Monday and it was a whopping 6-7ppm of Ammonia, and I realized I had made the mistake of dosing it quite a bit, so I did a PWC of about 45% on Tuesday and it had brought my Ammonia count down to about 4-5ppm. It is now Wednesday and I just checked my water for the thrill of it and here are my findings:

    2.0ppm Ammonia
    0ppm Nitrite
    0ppm Nitrate

I was wondering, is it normal for the Ammonia to drop ever so slightly, but have no increase in Nitrites?

Yes. Wait for ammonia to drop to 0 before dosing again, when you do, dose to 2 ppm instead of 4.

Bottom of this page has a handy guide for dosing ammonia: http://www.fishforums.net/aquarium-calculator.htm

Great! That's what I'll do. However, that doesn't answer the question (at least not for me to understand!), is this normal? For Ammonia to drop but show no signs of Nitrite? :S

I'm clearly a new fish owner as you can see, haha. I just want to do it right before I place ANY fish into the tank!

Edit: Also, the calculator suggests I dose it with 5ppm: as shown here. Should I do that, or stick to 2-3ppm for my daily doses?

Do you have plants? Or is this a bare aquarium?

At the moment, bare. I plan to go out later this evening to purchase some substrate and possibly a few Amazon sword's to add to it while I wait patiently, lol!

Yes, it is perfectly normal...it will take some days before trItes make an appearance, per the fishless cycling sticky: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...ead.php?t=5640

No problem being a newbie, we all were at one time...I am glad you are doing the right thing for your future fish

The calculator is a guide, you plug in the numbers you have, and want to achieve, and it calculate the ammonia for you

You must be CERTAIN that ammonia drops to 0 before dosing again, so you will not be dosing "daily" for a while

Hope this makes sense...BTW, a medicinal syringe (like those that are used to dose medicine to children) comes in VERY handy when dosing ammonia, you can get them (sometimes free) at your local pharmacy, or buy a few from the dollar store

EDIT: I erred in advice earlier...you will not half the dosing of the ammonia UNTIL nitrItes appear, as per the sticky...sorry for any confusion

Phew, that's a relief. I guess I didn't catch this part when I read the guide quite a few times,
You should began to very soon see nitrites, perhaps after only dosing the tank once or twice.
Haha. Thanks for your help and the peace of mind.

It's now Friday (2 days have passed) and the ammonia level is still 2.0ppm while there are still no nitrItes.

What temp is this tank?...BB grows better and faster at about 82F; do you have a heater to raise the temp?

An airstone will also help grow the BB, provides a bit more O2 to the tank

Which water conditioner do you use?

(sorry if I missed these earlier)
