Okay, so, my family is going on a trip spanning 5 days in 3 days. Recently, my dad's 40 gallon EXPLODED and now we have nowhere to keep the single goldfish. We dont have time to order new tank before trip, and I was wondering if I could put him in a 5 gallon divided in two with a betta (only for 1.5 weeks at most). The thing is, we dont have a divider for such a small tank, and definetly not the supplies for a diy one. I was wondering If i could just put a thin slice of regular wood (like the raw wood yoou find at hardware stores for building). Would it significantly rot/soften in 5 days for the trip? Thanks!

Yeah, I don't think I would try wood as a divider , no telling what would leach from the wood and into the water in that amount of time...can you re-home the goldfish?...or maybe find it a temporary home until you can get another tank?

5 gallons is barely enough for a betta by itself

Yes, slaps right on the 5G being to small for both. That said, your in a bind and it's what you have. There's really no need to separate a goldfish and a beta. You can't keep two male betas together, you can mix one beta with pretty much anything the same size. I've been doing that in a 10G for years now.

Yeah but this would be just plain wood, like no chemicals, fresh off a tree stuff. Would that be okay just for a few days?

Really? I've mostly read that you can't because Goldie's are shiny and the betta targets them! More research time I guess! :)

Chances are that same hardware/lumber store will also sell acrylic or polycarbonate sheets that can be used as a divider but as others have pointed out a five gallon is just way too small for a goldfish, a better temporary home would be a large trash can lined with a new non-scented bag, if your dad's 40's had a HOB on it chances are it will fit on the lip on the trash can and provide filtration.

Not to mention Goldfish are cold water species and the Betta are happy around the high 70s to 80 mark.
Or what about a kiddie pull from your local big box store, with summer ending, you could probably get one next to nothing. Some people use those for breeding areas anyway.

Large trash cans are very rare here, they're all metal or small plastic ones. All of ours are being used and would be disgusting if used as home
