Thread: Hello

  1. Default Hello

I have a 75 gallon freshwater, non heated tank. Although the temp stays between 76 to 82. It doesn't have any real plants but fake. Rounded gravel.

My sons girl friend had 4 round goldfish in a 5 gallon tank, and I was guilted into getting a large tank for them. I'm sorry I don't know the proper name for the round goldfish. After three years the last one died. Bad genes I'm guessing. But now I still have this 75 gallon tank so I decided I might as well enjoy it.

It's been completely emptied and scrubbed, gravel and filters cleaned. Now it's a lovely tank of fake plants!

I don't want anything big, and I hate "clutter". Any suggestions on what would be best?

Welcome to the AC, great folks and info here

Before considering new fish, you will want to have a cycled tank, a nitrogen cycle will take is a great guide to getting that tank cycled without fish..once it's cycled, you will have many options with a 75G:

Without a cycled tank, any new fish you add will not live long.

Hi thanks for the help! I'm not really sure what a cycled tank means. It's been emptied, scrubbed, refilled with filter on for three weeks so it wouldn't be a container of stagnate water.

A cycled tank is one that has colonies of BB (beneficial bacteria) growing that will consume the waste (ammonia) that the fish produce...these colonies grow mainly in your filter

Here's a brief explanation of the nitrogen cycle:

Hi again, I clicked on the working link and it mentioned de-chlorinating well water. Well water typically doesn't contain chlorine, but is always recommended . Ex,we have well water, were forced to have it tested by the EPA and gov, told to add chlorine?

I clean my floors with that,I don't want to drink it. But the like says to get rid of it for fish?

Welcome to the forum, where are you from? This will help people understand your water and what is available to you (equipment, products, fish, etc).

Once you have understood the cycle and shared your water paramters will us, we will be able to recommend some fish.

Is well water the only water available to you?

If so, you are going to need a test kit to measure the hardness of the water
