I actually have black backgrounds on the backs of the 40 gallon and the 10 gallon - I cut up a black trash bag to the sizes needed. Static cling and a little scotch tape are holding them in place. I couldn't bring myself to paint the backs of band new tanks or bring myself to pay what the pet stores were asking for their backgrounds. With only paying $10 for the 29 gallon tank and stand I'm less nervous about trying to paint the back of that tank. I guess it will be my experimental / practice tank.

You could use black poster board and cut that to size. I got mine from a dollar store for $1/sheet. Garbage bags are good but because they are shiny, you still get a lot of reflection off them.

I use black poster board myself. Works really well.

Thanks for that idea! I have noticed an issue with the reflection. I may use poster board for the back of the 40 gallon and just paint the back of the 29 gallon and the 10 gallon.

This is why I love this Forum - so many good ideas! And nice people!

Here's a pic of my 10 gallon with it's fancy black trash bag background, before I moved everything to the 40 gallon tank. The little female betta has gone to sleep with other fishies. :-(

I was mostly thinking the dark blue because I have a jar of sample paint handy. The dots hadn't connected in my brain yet that I would be buying black paint for the stand and might be able to use it for the tank as well. I'll have to read the can I guess to see if rustoleum can be used on glass. Although spray paint tends to stay on everything - especially if it's something you didn't mean to get it on.
Rustoleum is an enamel and should work fine on glass. Just make sure it is either satin or flat, not gloss.

I bought semi-gloss, but I can exchange it for satin or flat. Thank you!

I filled up the 29 gallon tank yesterday around noon. So far, so good. There doesn't appear to be any cracks or leaks! Hoping to drain all the water out tomorrow and start cleaning up the rusty stand.

I was thinking of putting the stand in the living room corner where the 40 gallon breeder now sits, with the 29 gallon tank on top and the 10 gallon on the bottom shelf. However, the more I think about all that will be involved in moving the 40 gal, the more I am inclined to leave it where it is. I asked the hubs this morning about where he thought would be a good place to put the two tanks if I decide not to move the 40 gallon. His response was a heavy sigh and face palm. lol

hahaha...I have to say I admire the way you write. Yes, also interested in watching your tanks come alive. But are you by any chance a writer by profession? I thoroughly enjoy your style!

I will keep an eye on this journal, for sure. And for the chuckles...welcome to the party!
