I think white clouds are the best.
Brilliant schooling fish and very hardy. You can also try Zebra leopard and pearl danios some of the most active fish available today

If you're going with bigger schools of these smaller fish, I would suggest that Clown or even Lyretail killis would be a great fit. They're both suitable for a community setting, as they have very tame/calm temperaments and stay small (clowns much smaller than the lyretail, though). Either way, you shouldn't have a problem. I've experienced Lyretails in a more aggressive tank and they just don't stand a chance. There are other, much more aggressive killis, like the Golden Wonder Killi, but they get quite large and will likely eat the smaller fish that will fit in its mouth.

I would have to agree on either Celestial Pearl Danios, which are quite striking in appearance - I have a school of them in a 20gal long, and/or the White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes), or their close, but smaller, cousins Tanichthys micagemmae.

Large schools of these little fish would look awesome in a planted tank w/ black background.

Right and they can be just fine in a community. Just not a community of small fish. Put it this way... I have Red Cherry Shrimp with mine.

Good to know. I want to keep RCS as well, and it would suck if they got eaten :)

One tetra you could do would be Bloodfin's, Aphyocharax anisitsi.
