sup fellow hobbyists , i'll be fixing up a 50gallon tank this month . It's currently outside soaking in some bleach , ill break down how i intend to go about the main aspects of the tank below

filtration - either a sponge filter or something diy

lighting - probably two generic double t8 fixtures over the tank

substrate- most likely dirt capped with gravel

plants - valls , wisteria , cabomba and maybe a dwarf sag carpet if i can get it going

livestock - ghostshrimp (if i can catch some this weekend ) and livebearers (most likely platies ) , oh and bristlenose plecos

the direction i want to go with this tank is low maintenance but eye pleasing but nothing too fancy

    i welcome suggestions and critiques

If you enjoy the DIY projects, then what about a sump for filtration ?

It can help you remove all the equipment from the tank making it look even better / more natural

I'm looking forward to reading more up-dates

cool , thanks for the advice cliff , the tank isn't drilled tho and i don't think i want to risk it but a hang on or external pvc overflow is definitely worth a try !

btw i just realized there's a "sub forum" for journals can this thread be moved there or should i just start a new one there ?

    NIce looking tank

I have also moved your thread as requested

If you are doing a low tech tank, Have you considered building a canopy and using some CLF lights inside ? I did one for my dad a few years ago and it is working great for a low tech / low light plants. pic below

I think Aeonflame did a very similar project for his 20 gallon low tech planted tank
