I grew up in a rural area, not farmland, but pretty rural, with small horse farms all around us (I have been around horses my entire life). My parents had a big gelding named Tiny (haha) and ran a little boarding stable during WWII and the horses all hated my sister and brother. They were always getting bit or kicked. Naturally, I was in love with horses from the day I was born, but by the time I came along, my parents had had it with equines. I had to get my horsey fix riding the neighbors' horses (another good story there).

One morning, when I was maybe 6 or 7 yrs old, I went outside to find a 1600 lb Hereford steer eating grass by our backdoor. We lived about a mile from the packing plant (slaughterhouse) and apparently one of the steers decided to take a walk in our direction. Well, I ran in the house and got my jump rope and tied it around the big guy's neck - he was mine. If I couldn't have my own horse to ride, I was sure gonna keep that steer! I walked him around the yard so he could eat grass. The manager from the packing plant and my dad had quite a time getting me to give him up! From that day on, every Sunday during good weather, I was driven about 30 miles to the livery stable so I could ride my favorite livery horse, Beauty, a pretty black & white pinto, on the forest preserve trails. No more riding just around the neighbors yards for me! I still think about that steer.....
