ok so I want to build a better sponge filter and I was wondering if the tube I want to use may have been used in a saltwater tank if I soak in in hot water and tested ph when the water cooled off if I could tell if there is salt on it, would this work? could I do the same with the sponge?

That does look like an egg. Whether it is fertilized or not I don't know. As for the sponge filter, I don't understand why it would be an issue if it was used in a saltwater set up. And congrats on the new babies.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.
