Default Anyone here make your own furniture ?

This also has been a hobby of mine for a long time now, and not just building tank stands.
I have had some old cedar that was taken off my grandfather’s back in the 1950’s when he built an addition to the house. This wood was used as exterior siding so it was painted on one side and original/ natural on the other. It was also original to the house when it was built in 1909. I had this cedar sitting in garage for a few years now waiting for a project I could use it.

This past week I figured I could use it to make a head-board and foot-board for our spare bed and just bolt it to the existing metal frame.

After applying the last coat of urethane last night, I put it all together this morning.

The boards used in the middle of the head/foot-board are the old wood from my grandfather’s house. I only gave it a light sanding to keep the old / distressed look. I used new cedar wood I purchased this past week for the rest of the project

I only lightly sanded the paint on the other side of the old wood to keep it as original as possible (plus I don’t want to have to remove lead based paint) and covered/sealed it with urethane as well.

If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Your bed looks great Cliff! And how awesome of a story to go with it.

I have a friend that does woodworking. He made me a quilt stand last year for my birthday.

I know he's also made his dinning room table, which is lovely.

I have a trade in with him and his wife to make me a tabletop yarn swift and some items for my antique quilting frame.

My grandfather was a master carpenter. I've still got a few of his jewellery boxes and I know a set of doors he's build in the 1920s. Well over 10 ft tall and 4ft wide and they still move at the touch of a finger.

Somehow I seem to have missed those genes. I can assemble a flat pack but that's it. :)

    Thanks guys

Trill: your friend picked out some nice wood and spent some time bringing the grain out like that

Talldutchie: it is amazing to see what a master carpenter can do. It almost seams like that is a dieing trade these days. And I am not referring to carpentry, only part of the trade that used to be hand crafted like: doors, trim, cupboards / cabinates, and even furniture.

For some reason I can't upload this from my computer and linking to it from the Member galleries gets this small image...

You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.

Looks great Cliff! Same for everyone else' pieces of furniture! I have several carpenters in my family but I just didn't end up going down that road. To be honest if I had the money to invest in the tools I would try my hand at being a blacksmith.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

    Good job guys!

...we don't build furniture...but we can do what I call 'wood hackery'. This weekend we tackled one such project.

I've been waiting 18 years for this:

Some very nice things here :)
My dad builds cabinets (i.e for his stereo), and custom speaker sets.
