Default Cardinals with tatty fins & scales?

I posted this in my journal as well but I wanted to get lots of opinions so thought I'd post here too.

So today I noticed that some of my Cardinals aren't looking too flash. Several of them look like they have chunks missing out of their fins -- it almost looks like something is nipping them. I tried to take a picture but they were too quick, so I caught a few and put them in a glass to examine. It looks kinda like the scales are rough or raggedy, like there are a few hanging off -- I would compare it to "old dry skin" looking scales. I took some pictures but they don't exactly show what I'm talking about, although you can see they look a little dull and aren't as shiny as they should be.

This is one of my largest cards. The flash sort of captured her weird scales. The white stuff on her that looks like fungus in the photo -- it isn't. It's scales. Also notice her top fin has ragged edges and her caudal fin isn't "clear".

Can see the scales clearly here.

Couldn't get a good photo of it but this one has a chunk out of its lower caudal fin and also just looks poorly... dull scales, etc.

None of my other fish seem affected, even my rams and apistos. I checked my parameters and I'm at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and nitrate around 5ppm. I'm dosing 2ml a day of flourish and thats all I'm using in the tank. WC 50-60% a week. pH is around 7.5... I put a bag of peat in the filter to lower it but it hasn't had any effect.

Looking at the photo again it kinda looks like they have red gills, but ALL the cardinals look like that... I can't tell if their gills are actually red or if its just their colour. They all seem to be breathing quite rapidly.

This is in a 120g tank, running 2x Sunsun 304B canister filters (I currently have the UV filters turned off) and at about 82F, stocked with 40 cardinals, 15 black neons, 10 bronze cories, some apistos and rams, and 8 juvenile angelfish.

My guess is your angelfish are taking bites at them. If I am right there isn't a whole lot you can do about it except get rid of one of the species. Sometimes if you take the angels out for a day or two, rearrange the tank, then put them back it helps, but the cardinals look enough like neons the angels might still go after them.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I believe Mommy1 is right here, you just can't trust Angels, which is to bad because I like them.

Hmm. I'd considered it but hoped it wasn't the case. I haven't noticed any aggressive behavior from the angels to the cardinals. Is there anyway to confirm this is whats happening this without actually witnessing it? I don't want to sell my angels on a hunch.

Not really. It could be the apistos or rams too but I think it is more likely the angels because they share the same area in the water column. Unless you actually witness the aggression it's still just a hunch who is actually the culprit.

Could the cardinals just be fighting amongst themselves? if a much larger cichlid
took a swipe at them you#d expect visible aggression (the angels are quite conspicuous after all), big chunks of fin or body missing or dead/injured cardinals.

tattered fins and individual loose scales sounds more like little fish biting little fish to me, the symptoms are quite similar to fight wounds on
male white cloud mountain minnows, and the fact that everyone else seems fine also speaks against anything water-quality related.

I'd considered that too Madagascar, but its so hard because I can't really prove and theory right or wrong... is there a possibility it could be parasites or something? What would people recommend as my plan of attack here? I have a 15g quarantine I could move them to but I don't think all 40 would fit. Or I could move them to my 60g and see if they improve in there?
