Thread: Anyone else have Windows 8.1?

Vista's not that bad, is it? It's what I have at home, works fine for my needs, which is basically surfing the net, buying stuff, and paying bills.
We have Windows 7 at work, and from what I understand, they're trying to avoid either 8 at all costs.

ME was version that was so bad I ended up changing to Linux(Mandrake). With ME the machine I was using would crash regularly at least once every 3 hours. It was amazing if you managed to make it run any longer than that. Same machine running a different OS, stayed up until you took it down to upgrade something. I know it was regularly getting over a month of uptime after the change. THAT is how bad it was.

I was able to get the icons I regularly use on the desktop. The only tiles I click on are the desktop and word pad, which I frequently use. The computer came with some desktop icons I'm going to remove, because I just don't have any use for them. For some reason, the word pad icon isn't on my desktop, though I'm sure my tech can transfer it over there if I wish. As for me, I'm not even going to try that. I might screw something up in the process! This layout is still a little scary, yet.
I also found that Outlook Express, where I had my e-mail, has been obsolete since Windows Vista. I still get my e-mail with the same address, but now I have to go through my ISP's web portal. There is a way I can get an alternative e-mail system, but I have to have my ISP set it up for me. For now, the webmail is sufficient.
And yes, Google is on the homepages of both of the browsers I use.
I like being able to type in these boxes without having to wait several seconds for the text to display itself. That drove me crazy in Windows XP and IE8.
I have no idea which version of IE is on this one, but it's a pretty fair bet it's more recent than 8.
Mozilla works better, too.
I may end up liking some features of Windows 8.1 and disliking others. But, that's how it was with the older system, too.
At least this one has Adobe Reader on it, so I can FINALLY open PDF attachments that certain people insist on sending in my e-mails. That's, IF it works. Haven't tried it, yet.
A bit shell-shocked, but I'm getting used to it.

I haven't installed any apps on the laptop yet. I just don't see a purpose, why install an app when you can get a full desktop version instead.
All in all I don't mind win8, I fix computers on the side for friends and friends of friends, win 8 has kept me busy and made me some $.

Well I finally got the icon for Wordpad transferred to the task bar just below my desktop. Makes it much quicker to access not having to go into the start menu for it. I like this new version of Wordpad. I can do things with it I couldn't with the older version I had. It also comes with a paint feature which I've been fooling around with a little.
My new ACER doesn't like dial-up, at all! I had to get the modem separately because it didn't come with one. It works, though grudgingly. I can just hear that puter grumbling about it every time it dials me up. Our rural phone system is crap, anyway. Can't get high speed out here, except for satellite, which is more expensive than I can afford right now.
I'm getting used to this, though the tech is still finding out new things about 8.1, because he's had almost no experience working with it. Had I known that Windows 7 was a better operating system, I would have upgraded to it, instead. But I was told 8.1 would be "simpler and faster". Yeah, right! ...
Well, this is what I have, so this is what I'll use ...20 gal. high: planted; 7 white cloud minnows, several RCS, 2 blue shrimp, 5 Amano shrimp, several snails; Azoo air. 65 gal: planted; 6 rosy barbs, 6 yellow glofish, 3 red glofish, 3 zebra danios, 5 white cloud minnows, 3 dojo loaches, 6 crimson spot rainbow fish, 12 large Amano Shrimp, several snails; AC110.
