swimming up and down the glass isn't mating behavior.

some fish do it for no apparent or observable reason (corydoras). many fish
do it when they are uncomfortable with something in the tank. maybe it is too warm, the water
parameters are off, it is too bright and they don't feel secure, their tankmates are harassing them, etc.

I've seen Clowns do it when they didn't have enough space. What size is the tank?

Though I've also seen plenty of species do it for no visible reason too.
Need centerpiece (or pair of centerpiece) fish suitably sized for a 55 gallon tank in progress.
    Got any ideas?

Given the fact that those mbuna seem fairly comfy and nicely coloured the water is too hard for the loaches.

This just seems to be them trying to find something, possibly shoal mates, possibly cover.

Bad combination of fish but nobody seems to be sick so I doubt it's a serious water problem

typical loach behavior. they love swimming in the currents of the tank and up and down the glass frequently. how many total do you have? the more the better with clowns.

My clown loaches always do that from time to time. I've always thought it is a sign of just being happy.

My clowns go up and down the glass and kind of dance an wiggle their fins. Yours seem to be acting more like yo-yos and doing circular flips and kinda playing in a current? They look good, but possibly lonely and under tanked. Do you just have the two? How big is the tank
