Default Recommended pet food for hamsters, guinea pigs...

Its pretty clear we're going to get either a hamster or guinea pig, most likely hamster.

I never thought about hamster food before. When I was young, I'm pretty sure it was Hartz that sold a big orange box of what was called hamster food---a motley collection of seeds, and some other things that looked processed (standard-shaped cylinders) but that the hamsters seemed to like, regardless.

Is there some brand, or some types of food, that are best for these rhodents?

Prr, if you have a bulk barn near by, you can mix your own at less cost. It's quality food to boot.

Bulk Barn is a Canada chain. I'm south of the border--a few days' drive. :)

I think it's crate and barrel there or something like that. 😃 I get all our bird feeder food there, 1/2 the price of the bag stuff even from Walmart.

If you mix your own food...just make sure you buy the salt-free options...

...and double check...they've made mistakes on their labeling.

I buy some parrot foods from the Bulk Food stores...

FWIW, we've gone with Purina, which has a line of rodent food. Our hamster likes it, and from all the feces in the cage, sure seems to eat a lot of it. Plus, its at a local target, so its easy to find.
