  1. Default Cycling Transition for a Tank Swap

    0 Not allowed!

I currently have an 8 gallon with three miniscule platy babies and three cherry barbs. My 15 gallon is arriving tomorrow. As the water doesn't contain the beneficial bacteria, would it be fine to just use the substrate and filter for the new tank and add completely new water?

Also, my filter is 550 litres per hour, probably a bit too weak for the size of tank. Is it definitely worth using it for two weeks to help the cycle? I plan to eventually get two more cherry barbs and a dwarf gourami.

You can transfer the filter, it contains most of the BB. The substrate will have some, but not much.

You can add completely new water as long as it is dechlored.

+1 to the above. Just move the filter and if you think it needs a better filter then just hook the new one up as well for a while and it will seed with BB from the old filter.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

Your filter will move nearly 10x's the volume of the 15g an hour. It will probably be fine to use long term.
If it's called tourist season why can't I shoot them?
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?
