    Default Homemade raw dog food

    0 Not allowed!
I know a few people here make their own dog food and dog treats, but does any here make their own raw dog food ?

The reason why I’m asking is that I am looking to buy a grinder that will be able to handle large beef bones without having to purchase a large industrial 220 volt grinder the size of a stove

Just wondering if anyone else has come across a solution to this without utilizing chicken as a base for the meat/fat/bone content.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I'm guessing the reason why raw food is so darn expensive is due to the equipment needed to grind up the bones to small enough bits to be easily digested.

Still looking into a cheap (ish) solution to this

    Cliff,
There's recipes aplenty online for making your own dog food.

Cliff we have been making our own raw/homemade dog food for 25+ years and never ground up bones for calcium. My wife uses raw meat and veggies but cooks the rice and potatos. Now for the Calcium she uses Calcium Citrate and Tri Calcium Phosphate. Very important to get ratios of phosphorous & calcium right or you can damage bones. We go thru around 700 lbs of assorted Beef, Pork, Chicken, Lama, Goat, Sheep and Rabbit each year for 2 Newfs!

Yes, I'm starting to understand how much more easier it would be to get and maintain the proper calcium and phosphorus level through using additives rather than using ingredients.

I can't believe how much I have learned about dog nutrition in the past year. It kind-of makes my skin crawl now when I look at the ingredients of some dog foods on the market today. Even some of the "better" ones have improper calcium and phosphorus levels for most of the breeds they are marketed for. This was what originally lead me to look into making our own raw food.

I still have a ways to go in my research

Thanks for the tip on using Calcium Citrate and Tri Calcium Phosphate. I'm going to look into that for sure

What type of dogs do you have Plecos ?

We have had Newfs for the last 28+ years and did research into commercial dog foods having tests run on them. Yes they laughed at us a long time ago when we said it was crap. Now it is cool to do! We baked treats for dogs many years. Used to be "Big Paws Pantry" till we sold it a couple years ago. Still make them for our dogs. Cancer, skin problems etc with store bought. Our Dogs have never had fleas and we never used flea repellent. They get baths about every 5 years and do not stink! If you eat good your coat takes care of itself.

Yes, things have sure started to change once dog owners started getting access to more information and started to research on their own to make more informed decisions.

The breeder we got our Shiloh Shepard from (also a long time friend) started her own raw dog food company about 10 years ago. I can remember when she did, there was a lot of people laughing at her as well. I don't think you would find too much of that these days
