    Hi everyone,
Lots of us here use the API Freshwater Master Test Kit to test the water in our aquariums. While the test kit itself is very useful, the instructions provided with it are cumbersome at best, in my opinion. I made a quick reference "cheat sheet" set of instructions for each parameter test. Of course, you fill each test tube with tank water up the line provided, then add the chemicals as shown below.

I have used this cheat sheet for quite awhile now. I have it copied to a Word document located on my home PC desktop

Any comments, suggestions, or opinions are welcome

    AMMONIA:
8 DROPS FROM BOTTLE 1, INVERT TO MIX, 8 DROPS FROM BOTTLE 2, SHAKE 5 SECONDS, WAIT 5 MINUTES.

    NITRATE:
10 DROPS FROM BOTTLE 1, INVERT TO MIX, SHAKE VIGOROUSLY SHAKE BOTTLE 2, 30 SECONDS OR MORE, 10 DROPS FROM BOTTLE 2, SHAKE HARD FOR 1 MINUTE, WAIT 5 MINUTES.

    PH:
3 DROPS, INVERT TO MIX, RESULTS ARE IMMEDIATE.

    NITRITE:
5 DROPS, SHAKE 5 SECONDS, WAIT 5 MINUTES.

    HIGH PH:
5 DROPS, INVERT TO MIX, RESULTS ARE IMMEDIATE.

Thanks Slap. Yeah for some reason I can never remember which bottle does what and looking through the little booklet is a fun chore. Looks good to me.

The number of drops is printed on the bottles, and if necessary the bottles are numbered 1 and 2. All you really need to remember is to shake the crap out of the second nitrate reagent.

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Thanks Rob...yeah, I didn't make the cheat sheet with 20 different languages like the original instructions have, so it's a bit more condensed

You are correct, thanks for the clarification. Inverting the tube does no harm, though.

I have corrected this in my original copy, thanks again

Matt had also posted this link to the online color chart for this test kit. (I forget where he posted that, I'd have quoted him if I could have found it)

I've bookmarked it to use though, and thought his link would be handy in this thread too.

just something to keep in mind when comparing the parameters with the online charts..
They will be close and in the ball park to the original print cards, but remember your monitor sees RGB. In reality the were printed with 4color process. The varying light and brightness will be different from monitor to monitor as well. This may make a light green look yellow or light green look dark green (depending on your monitor setting).
