    An UGF can work well but plant roots muck it up and every 18 months or so you're forced to rebuild the tank.

    Sounds like something to avoid altogether in a planted tank....a non planted one may be fine, I would guess

    Still, I prefer to have (relatively) east access to my equipment

    If you want something classic, a hamburger mattenfilter would be another option

    I stop in there a lot and have done so ever since I started in the hobby 2 1/2 years ago. It's pretty much the only place I buy my fish. The tanks are spotless and I always check them out - same fish with the occasional new addition. He has some bosemani rainbows that have lived past 4 years which is their life expectancy.

    He's recently set up a 180 gal SW that is stunning!
    30 g FW planted:corys, ABNP, blue angel, harleys, zebra danios, nerites & mystery snails
    15 g FW planted: crown tail betta, neons, snails
    90 g FW semi planted: Blood Parrots, severum, Jurupari, EBJD, congos, kribs, clown pleco, snails

    This is what I'm doing on my next tank. Wish I had thought of this earlier, it would have been great for this tank. Though the canister is still a good option.
