  1. Default Upgrading Lighting & Filter

    Hello all,

Just signed up to the forums as I have restarted my hobby!

    Background info:

I am 4/5 weeks in to my fishless-cycle (adding ammonia), tank size is 36x12x15 (100l). I have an All Pond Solutions 650IF Filter and a cheap LED light bar that doesnt barely give any light off at all and the tank hood does no justice either, in terms of light direction.

Now I have realised that I have made the mistake of not buying adequate lighting (going for planted aquarium) or filtration for my aquarium so I have decided to reinvest whilst my days are still early and there are no fish yet.

Now I am just looking on a bit of advice really. I am willing to cut my losses and buy the 2 below:

90cm Overhead Dual T5 Lighting Unit 2x39w (All Pond Solutions)

    External Filter 1000 L/H
    (All Pond Solutions)

I'm already at a loss buying a hood, incorrect lighting and filtration so would the above be a suitable bang for the buck upgrade?

Stock wise I am going with 6 Tiger barbs and 4 Cory Cats and medium density plants.

What size tank is it? For LEDs I have liked what I've seen from finnex, as for filters I'm a sucker for eheim

tank size is 36x12x15 (100l 26g). LEDs seem too expensive. I bought a cheapy LED light bar off ebay, bad mistake.

Look at aquatraders, can get a decent 36" t5 for $45 shipped

LEDs are expensive but they are great in the long run. Cost less to run and do not need the bulbs replaced, unlike the T5s and T8s. As far as lighting for plants, but the LED and the T5 will do great. So it's a matter of up front cost or cost to maintain.

As for filters I've never had a canister filter but I love love love the Aquaclear (now Fluval) HOB filters.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.
