Understood, I know you'd have to clean it in tank water...and in your situation, we're talking one betta.

But people use sponge filters in big tanks, with lots of fish...just seems there's not enough surface area to support a big colony of BB that would be needed.

Sponges eventually break down over long periods of time, too...then what?

Not sure, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it! Hahahaha But yeah, you see these big fish rooms and nothing but sponge filters. Makes you wonder if they hold more than you think or we filter more than what is really needed. Certainly not bad to over filter though.

Well that's good to know. I do want to put some Kuhli loaches in this tank once things are going good and the tank has run for a little longer. I don't think Smaug will have a problem with them. I thought about pigmi cories but they would be too close to dwarves and I don't think he'd stand for that.

Pigmy corys are pretty easy to keep with betta's in my experience. Is he super territorial?

It was a joke based off him being called Smaug and all. lol As far as territorial, not sure. He's not been with anything else. But he will flare at the drop of a hat. lol I think he sees his reflection in one side of the tank cause he just swims back and forth all puffed out on that side.

I'll just bump this since we rabbit trailed a little. Do you think MTSs would be good for keeping the sand from compacting? If so, do you think they will cause a problem with the dirt below the sand?

Why are you worried about the sand compacting? I don't give it a second thought, and mine's deep.

    I don't have dirt, though
