I found it especially interesting because of the pH of the lake: 10.5, yet there is a thriving ecosystem in place because the organisms have been raised on it and have adapted over generations to the lay of the land (well, water). However, when a foreign organism comes to the lake, "it can burn the skin and eyes of animals that aren't adapted to it." Kinda relatable to tropical fish keeping, and surreal pics to accompany!

That is pretty cool. Have you heard of alcolapia alcalica, a cichlid that can live in those waters?

Now I have! I don't claim to know too much. I just googled it, common name "soda cichlid". Pretty.

Someone had imported soda cichlids a while back, apparently they can be kept in a lower pH than found in the lake. Interesting fish, but overall not all that, plenty of other species to keep me occupied.
