Ok so i have a small problem and that is with the pygmy cories my LFS does not have any in and will not for a pretty long time (said the owner) but they but they did recommend the java loach and panda cory but that's a pretty hard decision. My other small problem is trying to pick between pool filter sand and play sand i have heard good and bads on both but i don't know which is better and with these 2 problems i am resulting to you all.

I've used pool filter sand with 0 issues, just needed to be rinsed. Heard horror stories about it compacting in the tank, but I've not had any issues, and recently added MTS just to be safe. Out of curiosity, why did you scratch off the apisto?

I've had good results with play sand. Tough choice between the panda cory and the loach. They are both some of my favorites, but personally I would go with the loach, mostly because Pangio are one of my most favorites. If you can get a good sized group of them they play all over the tank and are fun to watch.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I just at looked these Pangio -- they are a very cool-looking loach. (Sorry my kid is doing a unit on puns at school, she's got me stuck)

They get to 4", according to one chart. How big of a foot print would a group of these need, do you suppose? How big of a group would they feel comfy in? 8 or so?
40 gal fw: 3 male Platys; 16 Neon Tetras; 9 Cherry Barbs; ~30 Red Cherry Shrimp; an Assassin snail; a Mystery snail
live plants: 2 Lace Java Fern on dw; a Moss ball; 2 bunches of Java Moss on rocks; some Cladophora algae on dw

In my experience you can cram a lot (within reason) of pangio into a tank. I wouldn't put them in anything less than a 10g and bigger is better. I know some species are a 4" fish, but it's not like a 4" cichlid, and they don't have a big bio-load. They do need plenty of room to swim around and show off their antics. How many you can get into a tank depends on the set-up, filtration, and tank mates. I had 22 in my 29g at one point. They bred and I could never get a head count after that.

I scratched off the apisto because the local fish store I go to recently started to has recently got some beautiful kribs that I fell in love with. As of with the sand I'll go with play manly because it's cheaper and with the bottom feeders I'm going with the java or kuhli loach. But now I'm debating on which dwarf cichlid I should get. I would get the GBR but I hear they are really hard to care for I still want to try aleast one of them again.

And another fish has been thrown off the list lol but in my defense i just found the silver hatchets to be pretty dull in color to me personally. With the dwarf cichlids I have fell in and out of love with so many but i'm currently in love with the Smiling acara (Laetacara curviceps) and the Bolivian ram .
