You could go and net some and get some other fish around that area for the tank you just need a fishing license

Yes they are just like cichlids.

The sunfish family are essentially the North American cichlids. I don't believe there are (m)any NA cichlids and I don't believe sunfish exist anywhere else but NA.

I'm rating this thread with 5 stars. I think there should be more enthusiasm for NA native fishes. In my opinion there should be more discussion and even a sub forum in the cold water section. The only fish I think are more colorful or beautiful are the salt water species.

I put down a minnow trap off my dock to catch some bait to go fishing, and was amazed at what I caught. They were small so I'm not sure of the species except for the shiners - but there was some flat fish in there, I think bluegill, along with a crayfish. When I start my 72 gal bowfront, I am definitely considering a native tank. I'll take sand and weeds right from in front of my house, and keep whatever happens to come into my minnow trap. I'd like to try and feed them natural food, so when they get too big, hopefully I can just release them and catch more fry and start over again.

Be sure to check local laws on releasing fish, even native species back into the wild. In Wyoming that is against the law for instance.

in my opinion u should never release a captive fish to the wild because of the bacteria in the fishtank can hurt the ecosystem in the wild even if its a wild caught fish and yes their should be a section just for native fish i love native fishtanks ive had pumkin seeds, bluegill and yellow perch and they are alot better than store bought when it comes to brains and hardiness
