Welcome to the AC! - Slaphppy7

    Default Hello from the UK!

Good Afternoon from the not so sunny UK!

Soon-To-Be 18 year old popping over to introduce myself!

I've had some fascination of fish for a long time however other than the typical 'I won a goldfish at the fair' jobby, I haven't really had much experience. My goldfish always lived in a pet shop 'beginners' tank (basically a small plastic tank) and didn't live very long as you can imagine.

So we stopped with the fish and forgot about them until the other day when I was in town with a friend and we decided to get her a small tank (19L) so that she could watch them as she is very sadly permanently bed bound. We went for a lovely looking tank, 'Fish (X?) Box' Branded. It included lights and filters and we added gravel, literally following each instruction to the dot. Today, after 3 days of cycling the tank, we got some fish. Now, I believe we may have too many in the tank (6) however, the fish/shop keeper didn't turn us away so we brought home six little, and very pretty fish. So that's one part of the story.

I then decided that I would like my own tank in my room, with light and filter so that I could make a lovely, living and colourful environment for some fish of my own. So today I purchased a 60L tank and it will be arriving sometime tomorrow. So now I am very excited to say that I will soon be a fish owner again!

Not sure what else to put in my introduction but thank you for reading and I hope to learn a lot regarding the care and information on goldfish!

Welcome to the AC, great people and info here...please DO read all of the stickys in the beginner section that you can, especially the cycling threads, as mentioned above.

I am somewhat concerned about your friend's tank, 3 days is not near long enough to cycle a tank and provide a healthy environment for fish.

We were informed by the fish savvy handler at the pet store that we were to cycle the tank for 3 days which we did - She really was into the care of the fish, so much so that she refused to sell us any fish until we had waited 3 days.

She may seem courteous and well-informed, but keep in mind what her job duty is: to sell things and make money.

A responsible fish keeper will educate themselves about the hobby, and will not depend on what the folks in the shops tell you. Many here will tell you that their cycle, whether fishless or with fish, took weeks to accomplish, even a month or more, as was my case.

Very well. Although, if she was so desperate for a sale surely she would have allowed us to buy the fish we had chosen?
Not so sure if the underlined section is a dig at me? I sure hope not.

So, we can cycle the tank with the fish in?

No digs whatsoever, my friend. I am just sharing my experience.

Yes, you first need a good liquid testing kit, and a good quality water conditioner, in order to do either a fishless or fish-in cycle.

Many of us here use these: http://www.amazon.com/API-Freshwater.../dp/B000255NCI
