There are three different species of kuhli available in the hobby. One is gets about 1.5-2 inches and is skinny, one is like Trillianne described, and one is somewhere in the middle. You will have to look them up to see the slight differences of each, I can't remember off the top of my head at the moment. Pangio kuhli, Pangio myersi are the two I can think of but there is a third.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything Happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Rules: If you bend them long enough they turn into loopholes and you can walk right through them.

Whoops, that was supposed to be three different Pangio that we call kuhli available in the hobby, Pangio kuhli, Pangio myersi, and Pangio whatever the third one is called. I have kept all three in the same tank and all three group together and play nicely together.

Definitely agree with what mommy1 said, there are many loaches that look like kulhis and some may not even be sold under the correct name.
The best advice I can give you if this situation comes to place is to prevent it by buying all of your loaches at the same time, and to make sure that you have the correct species. This way you won't have to worry about getting different loaches. If you don't mind, then it doesn't matter, but I myself would want to be safe as possible for the long term.

With dwarf chains, there's only a slight chance that a LFS may be selling black lined loaches under the incorrect common name. I doubt this ever happens much as they should be identifiable.

Kuhlis do indeed seem to be rather convoluted when it comes to exactly what you're getting. I will keep an eye on my source.

Thanks for all the great info, everybody!

This isn't necessarily true. I bought all three species at the same time from the same tank. I did so because I had already talked with a few respected keepers about them and knew they would all be fine together and group together as though the same species. Kuhli loaches are social, not schooling fish. Anyway here is a forum article about some of the different species we call kuhli loach. The three most common, at least in my area are, Myersi, Kuhli, and Semicincta is the one I couldn't remember last night. I have also seen cuneovirgata and alternans in the shops on rare occasions. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?...f-kuhli-loach/

Very helpful link--thanks! I want Pangio malayanam but I'm guessing I will settle for kuhli.

That's a great price!! I have not seen them that low in a long time, how big are they?

I'm guessing pretty tiny. The lady who runs the LFS and I have sort of an unspoken deal: She special orders me fish and sells them to me at-cost (and I don't have to pay shipping!). In return, she gets experience with new species she would otherwise never order (and would probably never even know about), and occasionally I sell mature, healthy fish back to her that she can sell at a profit.

    I ain't complaining. :D
